Job Description

NRS Dounreay is recruiting for firefighters within the Dounreay Fire, Ambulance & Rescue Service (DFARS) to respond to a wide range of emergency calls and services in support of Dounreay and Vulcan site operations and the wider local community. 

The successful candidate will be required to meet stringent health and physical fitness standards and will initially attend a 13-week residential training course with Durham Fire & Rescue Service or an equivalent training venue.  On completion of firefighter training, the candidate will receive further competency based on-the-job training.  The candidate will be employed with a day shift watch but provide casual shift cover, which will include short notice callouts, when required.  A pensionable shift allowance is payable.

Future job role requirements may include ambulance practitioner and rope rescue operator qualifications.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Carry out specific duties as referenced in DFARS procedures and working instructions 
  • Participate in training and exercising personnel in preparation for on and off-site major incidents                               
  • Provide support to the training of site and local emergency service personnel   
  • Provide training for appointed persons first aid, breathing apparatus and rope rescue     
  • Respond to emergency incidents including fires, rescues, ambulance calls and special services 
  • Participate in fire evacuation exercise 
  • Carry out maintenance inspections on site specified equipment as per the K/SRE work programme 
  • Undertake the inspection of vehicles and maintain its equipment 
  • Provide support to the ambulance technician 
  • Continuous personal development through on-the-job training
  • Perform the responsibilities of management authorisations relevant to post 

 Aptitudes and Experience:

  • Ability to work as part of a team maintaining personal and team safety as a priority
  • Core knowledge of the Dounreay site and the decommissioning phase
  • Previous experience in an emergency response role would be advantageous
  • Willingness to train as an ambulance practitioner and rope rescue operator
  • Sound decision making, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Physically fit to meet the required fitness standards – see post specific physical capability analysis
